Art of Eyri
"Here is artwork for or about The Magic of Eyri. First up is a bunch of sketches I did of characters and places when I was first working on the details of the book. I tend to form better ideas when I sketch things out as I brainstorm. Again, I'm trying not to give away any spoilers, so I haven't included everything I've drawn and some of my descriptions may be a little cryptic. Also keep in mind that these (unless noted) were only sketched with pencil and were not inked, or really finalized in anyway - so they are just raw, fast, random sketches.
If you want to see more sketches by me (including some other Eyri stuff), head over to the Sketch Book section of danieljhogan.com" - DJH

Alexander The Small and Crew - "Alexander is the little duck captain that Steve meets during his travels. Despite his small stature, he has a larger than life personality. He also has a problem with sea-sickness. The drawing on the left has the first sketch I did of him and has him with an eye patch and smoking a pipe, which I did away with. His crew, Hector and Julius are drawn for the first time in the second drawing."

Blue Herons - "The drawing on the left (done with a Micron 'brush' pen) is the first Eyri drawing I ever did, even before I even knew what the story was going to be. The third is close to what I imagined Istrio, the blue heron mystic, to finally look like."

The Kractus - "Without giving too much away, the Kractus is a creature Steve runs into during his quest. It is a mix of a Kraken and a cactus - and here's the hook, it isn't a sea-monster. That's all I'll say."

The Roc Lobster - "Another odd-ball creature Steve has a run in with while in Eyri. It is a mix of the giant bird of myth, the Roc, and a lobster. It's the biggest, baddest bird-crustacean you'll ever run into. The first two sketches were my first couple of ideas (the second is actually a ROCK Lobster I think). The final drawing on the right is what I imagined for the final look of the beast."

Queen Lana the IV - "Lana is the Queen of the Wurms, a sea-dwelling race of Eyri."

Arx A'Quila and Arx Vena'Tor - "Two castles in Eyri that both play important roles in the story. That's all you get."

The Paper Tiger - "Yet another wacky creature Steve and his companions run into while traversing Eyri. He is made up of floating paper squares and rectangles."

Swordfish - "A tiny, fish-like creature that Steve uses as a weapon. Its tongue is actually shaped like the blade of a sword and is released by squeezing the funny creature's mid-section."

Swantan Warrior - "A very early sketch of what a Swantan warrior might look like. The Swantan are a race of swan-people that make up the burly foot soldiers of the Hawk-King's army. This isn't what I really picture them to look like by the time I was done with the book."

Uncle Shameless - "A quick sketch I did early on of what Steve's wacky uncle might look like."

Eira - "Eira is a pelican and also a healer. She is one of the first friends Steve and Uncle Shameless make after arriving in Eyri."

Zeroth - "Very, very early sketch of Zeroth (he wasn't even called Zeroth then). This was before I did my first major re-write and totally changed his character around."

Fiach-Ra, The Hawk-King - "Probably the second or third sketch I ever did. Actually, I came up with the idea of the Hawk-King before I even started working on the outline of the story - he came to me in a dream."
