The Characters
"Here's a quick run down of some of the main characters in The Magic of Eyri. Keep in mind that I don't want to give too much away, so some of these characters might not have much written about them - and I'm leaving others out altogether. I can't tell ya everything!" - DJH
Steve - The thirteen-year-old reluctant hero of The Magic of Eyri from the Michigan suburb of Beacon Pines. He is skinny, not very strong and wears glasses - y'know, the typical makings of a great literary hero. He believes everything can be explained with logic and science - but he quickly learns that isn't always the case once he arrives in Eyri. Steve plays the straight man to his goofy and charismatic Uncle Shameless.
Uncle Shameless - Steve's wacky uncle from the darling little mid-Michigan town of River City. Things haven't been going too well for him since he was forced to shut down his failing farm, but the one thing that brings him joy in life is spending time with Steve. Always quick with a joke or a story - no matter how corny - Uncle Shameless is a source of constant amusement for those around him. Unlike his logic-minded nephew, Uncle Shameless is one to always go with the flow, no matter how crazy the situation.
A quick note on the races of Eyri:"Eyri consists of many races including (but not limited to) humans and animals. The animal-people (and other races) of Eyri are anthropomorphized and act like humans. Not every species of bird-people has wings and can fly, only some do. Got all that?" - DJH
Istrio - (pronounced: IST-REE-OH) One of the first bird-people of Eyri that Steve and Uncle Shameless meet after their arrival. He is a blue heron, and a mystic of the eagle goddess, Zaa. He is very old, very cranky and enjoys giving Steve a hard time. Istrio is the one who informs young Steve of his role in The Prophecy and keeps tabs on the would-be hero through-out his quest, much to Steve's annoyance.
Eira - (pronounced: EAR-AH) A friendly pelican-lady, who is also a healer. She quickly becomes a valuable part of Steve's party.
Zeroth - (pronounced: ZIR-OATH) A crafty bird-man with a fondness for cooking and yellow scarves. Zeroth is also a Hunter - one of Eyri's many bounty hunters for hire.
Fiach-Ra - (pronounced: FEE-OCK RAH) The wicked Hawk-King of Eyri and the main villain of the story. Unlike some of the other bird-people of Eyri, the Hawk-King (as well as his fellow hawks) has wings on his back in addition to to having arms (so, like a dragon or an angel one could say). He is nearly immortal and a powerful magic user, thanks to his trademark weapon, the flaming Spear of Zuu. He also has a nasty looking scar going through his left-eye that was given to him by the last human King, Donal, a few hundred years ago.
Hawken Warriors - (pronounced: HAWK-IN) Fiach-Ra's loyal hawk-people subjects. Like their king, the Hawken have wings on their back in addition to having arms. They are smaller than Fiach-Ra and leaner than the burly Swantans. Hawken are renowned for their excellent eye-sight and are expert archers.
Swantan Warriors - (pronounced: SWAN-TAN) The other half of Fiach-Ra's forces, the swan-like Swantan are muscle-bound fighting machines. Unlike the Hawken, the Swantan do not have wings on their back, but this does not make them any less dangerous. They are very strong and enjoy hand-to-hand combat. Sadly, they are not known to be the quickest thinkers.
